Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was announced before the worldwide release of the second film in the franchise. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the second film scored a 69% approval rating based on 168 reviews. The film also performed well at the box office, as it is presently the ninth highest grossing film of 2022 with a worldwide gross of $402 million.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Release Date
The release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was confirmed by Paramount Pictures only a few days ago: December 20, 2024. The release date follows the pattern of previous films in the franchise. The first film was released in the United States on February 14, 2020, and the second two years later, on April 8, 2022.
There appears to be an issue, however, as Jim Carrey, who portrayed Dr. Robotnik in both films, said a few months ago that he intends to retire. Therefore, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 may be the actor's final feature. Neal Moritz, one of the producers of the Sonic films, stated that if the iconic actor retires after the second picture, they will not attempt to replace the character, hence Dr. Robotnik will not appear in the third film. Moritz also mentioned Carry's affection for the franchise, which could influence his decision to work on the movie for the final time.
Ben Schwartz, who voices Sonic, and James Marsden, who portrays Tom, are confirmed to return for the third feature. However, Jim Carrey's status is currently unconfirmed.
In addition to the news about the planned film, a spin-off series is also in development. The series will focus on Knuckles, whose voice was provided by Idris Elba in the flicks. Elba reprises his role as Knuckles in the spin-off, as previously established. The series will premiere on Paramount+ in 2023. The exact date is currently unknown.
